At the Special Meeting held March 23, 2020, Mayor Harvie and Delta Council unanimously gave fourth reading and final adoption to a new bylaw enabling the City of Delta to defer the late payment penalty deadline for 2020 flat rate utility bills to June 1, 2020.
This new bylaw is intended to provide some financial relief to Delta residents during the current challenging times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Delta Council will review the bylaw later this spring to determine whether a further extension to the late payment penalty deadline is required.
"We recognize the financial hardship being faced by our residents and businesses at this time and want to reduce stress and anxiety around finances where possible. This bylaw will help provide some relief for many in our community. The City is also working on an economic recovery plan for Delta with strategies to help stimulate our local economy during these challenging times." - Mayor George V. Harvie
Mayor Harvie has also written to the Provincial government requesting to adjust requirements to qualify for the Property Tax Deferment Program to allow for broader participation. Mayor Harvie and City staff continue to work with all levels of government to seek measures that could alleviate the financial burden that many British Columbians are faced with during this time period.
